Last year we embarked upon what we thought would be a straight forward project. We wanted to replace the willowy swamp in front of our house with a pond. It turned out to be rather more than we expected but the story has a happy ending, and we did finally end up with a wonderful recreational and wildlife area. The boys, with help from a neighbor, stocked the pond by fishing various local ponds. They were looking for bass and sunnies. There are approximately 24 bass and 100 sunnies in the pond now and perhaps a few bullhead catfish. Next year we hope to add a few other maintenance type fish to eat the algae and any grass that might crop up. We have already had several visitors to our pond...word must have spread quickly! A pair of Mergansers were daily visitors for several weeks, as well as a goose that liked to eat my freshly planted grass. A solitary Sandpiper also spent some time in the shallow areas before the pond had filled, and I watched a Great Blue Heron pick off one of our fish on a rainy, misty morning. A few muskrats call our pond home too. We would like to thank our neighbors the Messineo's, especially Dave and Li'l Dave who developed the design and helped with the installation of the best dock and diving board in the county! |
